Much more needs to be said about Paul Robeson, who Much more needs to be said about Paul Robeson, whom Garry would model himself after. (Gary's leading role in The Lost Cavalier is an homage to Robeson’s film The Song of Freedom. )

Robeson was a highly trained actor and lawyer who figured prominently in the Harlem Renaissance - adept at classical theater (Othello and The Emperor Jones, to name a few) and equipped with the defining bass-baritone voice featured in the stage and film versions of Showboat. He found common ground with Albert Einstein as a fellow music lover and opponent of fascism. But it was his transformation into a political activist during the 40s-60s which raised awareness for anti-lynching legislation, trade unions, and civil rights - and drew the ire of the US Government. His works were removed from public distribution, and he was forced to live in Russia and Europe until failing health brought him back to the US, where he died in 1976.

His biographer, Martin Duberman, noted “the continuing inability of white America to tolerate a black maverick who refused to bend.” His life, work and story have been chronicled on screen and stage since then.

The Federal Theatre Project (1935-39) employed wri The Federal Theatre Project (1935-39) employed writers, directors, actors and other theater workers during the Great Depression. Their productions were commercially and critically successful (like The Emperor Jones, which we imagine Garry would have been excellent in), but Congress ended the program due to “accusations of racial integration and communist infiltration”.

The American Negro Theatre began in 1940, merging the FTPs ideals with W.E.B. Du Bois’ four fundamental principles of African-American theater. ANT’s first production, On Striver’s Row, is being presented at @nccutheater next month – so make sure to check that out.
