Casting – Fuddy Meers – in-person and video auditions – SUNDAY, AUGUST 7th

Switchyard Theatre Company is casting their upcoming production of FUDDY MEERS by David Lindsey-Abaire. Show runs October 20-28th, 2022 at Burning Coal Theatre (The Murphey School), Raleigh. Directed by Jeff Aguiar, produced by Charles Machalicky. A stipend is available.

We are seeking an ensemble cast of energetic performers. Multi-racial, differently-abled and nonbinary performers desired; clowning and improv skills a plus. It’s bound to be a wild ride! And more important than anything: If you think you don’t fit, you might want to consider auditioning!

Play Synopsis

This poignant and brutal comedy traces one woman’s attempt to regain her memory while surrounded by a curio-cabinet of alarmingly bizarre characters. Claire has a rare form of psychogenic amnesia that erases her memory whenever she goes to sleep. This morning, like all mornings, she wakes up a blank slate. Her chipper husband comes in with a cup of coffee, explains her condition, hands her a book filled with all sorts of essential information, and disappears into the shower. A limping, lisping, half-blind, half-deaf man in a ski mask, pops out from under her bed and claims to be her brother, there to save her. Claire’s info book is quickly discarded, and she’s hustled off to the country-house of her mother, a recent stroke victim whose speech has been reduced to utter gibberish. Claire’s journey gets even more complicated when a dimwitted thug with a foul-mouthed hand puppet pops up at a window, and her driven husband and perpetually stoned son show up with a claustrophobic lady-cop that they’ve kidnapped. Every twist and turn in this funhouse plot bring Claire closer to revealing her past life and everything she thought she’d forgotten. It’s one harrowing and hilarious turn after another on this roller coaster ride through the day of an amnesiac trying to decipher her fractured life.

Casting breakdown:

All roles are open to actors of any race, gender or ethnicity. The breakdown below is provided by the playwright. While the story of Fuddy Meers does include these elements as experienced realities, our concept is a bit more expansive, posing big questions about what is and/or isn’t real: When we don’t know who we are, what determines how we are? To that end, our community of willing actors/storytellers will inform and drive the creative concept.

  • Claire – a generally sunny woman with amnesia
  • Richard – Claire’s husband, chatty, friendly, sometimes nervous
  • Kenny – a troubled teen, son of Claire and Richard
  • Limping Man – a lisping, limping, half-blind, half-deaf man with secrets
  • Gertie – an older, clear-headed lady who’s had a stroke and can’t speak properly
  • Millet – an odd man, simple and honest, who communicates an alternative version of himself through a handmade puppet
  • Heidi – a tough woman in uniform
